031 – HEY BOO! (BUSTED)

NOTE: By 11pm the entire venue was full, and there were thousands of people in the neighboring streets. Police were called, and the event was shut down. We wrote an apology (see below), and adjusted communication strategies again.
This Halloween weekend, Spotlight invites you to Things That Go Bump in the Night Part Deux: the completely gratuitous sequel you freaks have been shrieking for. Come in or out of character — just be ready to rattle your bones to some haunted-ass house.

APOLOGY:
Hi everyone,We are deeply sorry that Saturday did not turn out as expected. You saw the house all set for Halloween, we saw your costumes. It could have been a great night.
We’re fortunate to have had 31 successful underground Spotlight events over the past 5 years. These events do not take place in regular nightclubs, because regular nightclubs won’t accommodate the kind of nights we want to have. These events do not happen regularly, because it’s impossible to predict exactly when all the variables will come together to pull one off. We are an extremely small, queer-run operation, and we build this event from scratch every time, to celebrate you — our community.
Last year our Halloween party — at this exact same venue — was one of those nights where everyone was on the same wavelength, and everything was magic. There were zero issues. When we were offered the house again this year, we jumped at the chance. We flew in an incredible DJ from London, and we worked for weeks on decor.
We capped our RSVPs to fall well within the capacity of the house and its grounds. The party was organized for the number of guests we anticipated. What you saw outside was way beyond our invited list of people, and way beyond our capacity.
The police were called by people who live in the neighborhood who were afraid of so many people outside. Neighbors saw guys breaking into their yards in order to climb over fences to get inside. This is the reason the cops gave for shutting down the event — not the party itself, but the behavior in the streets outside the party.
We make a few simple requests in order to preserve our Spotlight events. Unfortunately, this past Saturday, the address and/or invitations were blasted well beyond our invited list. Also, unreasonable numbers of people tried to glom onto invited guests.
If you’re not interested in doing your part to protect this party, this party is not for you.
Furthermore, if you are one of the people who stuck gum to the antique wood walls of what is a certified historic monument, or who put your cigarettes out on our decor, this party is not for you. If you read our email imploring guests not to use GHB, but still used and dropped one of the more than 50 vials we swept up yesterday, this party is not for you.
We’ve received some incredible, supportive messages from those who understand what we’re up against, respect what we’re trying to do and have helped create the experience the way it’s meant to be. To those of you who are interested in helping to preserve this kind of event, and in a larger sense, to build a stronger, more inclusive, more vibrant queer community for Los Angeles: this party IS for you.
What’s next? If you’re with us, please be on the lookout. We’ll be back with more information soon.
